Noro One-Skein Hat
from the bottom up
*Divide the stitches into groups of 15 as above but work the decreases thus: Flory Loughead©2004
Finished Size: To fit a 20 inch head.
Yarn: one ball of Noro Kureyon, 100% wool, 50 gr - 100 meters
If you use Noro Kureyon and knit from the hem up, it will take two skeins.
Needles: 4 double point needles and 16 inch circular size US 7 (4.5 mm)
Gauge: TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE
4.5 stitches to the inch over Stocking stitch.
There are two choices for the making:
from the top down
Cast on 12 stitches on 3 dbpns and knit with the fourth. Place marker and join, being careful not to twist. Knit one round.
Increase by knitting into the front and back of the stitch.
Next row: *increase in 1st and 3rd stitch; repeat from* for each needle.
Next row: *increase in 1st and 4th stitch; repeat from* for each needle.
Next row: *increase in 1st and 5th stitch; repeat from* for each needle.
Continue increasing until there are 30 stitches per needle.
Change to 16 inch circular needle when dbpns prove too short.
Knit in the round until you almost run out of yarn.
To assure a loose bind-off, use a larger
needle for the last one or two rounds.
Bind off, weave in ends and close the hole at the top. Block as needed.
To assure a loose cast-on edge, use a larger size needle for the
cast-on; switch to the smaller needle to work the body of the hat.
With circular needle cast-on 90 stitches, place marker, join being careful
not to twist.
Knit 54 rounds or until hat is long enough; about 9 inches long.
You can also cast on 88 or 92 stitches (instead of the 90 called for) and
knit in ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) for about 9 inches. If you do this,
remember to increase (decrease) two stitches before starting on the next
Next round: knit 15, place marker; repeat around.
Make sure the beginning of the round marker is distinctive.
*First decrease round: slip marker, knit 13, knit 2 together; repeat around.
Next round: slip marker, knit 12, knit 2 together; repeat around.
Continue knitting in rounds working a knit 2 together before each marker until 6
stitches remain.
Switch to double point needles when the circular proves too long.
Cut the yarn leaving a tail about 12 inches long. Thread a needle and close
the top of the hat by slipping the 6 stitches onto the threaded needle and
pulling tightly passing the tail to the inside of the hat. Weave in all ends,
block as needed.
Slip marker, SSK, knit to next marker; repeat around. All rounds are worked
the same.
Continue until 6 stitches remain and close the top of the hat as above.
The only difference about these two methods is that with a K2tog the swirls
at the top of the hat will go to the right and with the SSK, they will go to the
left.
