Circular Yoke Sweater
Finished Measurements: 40 inches around; 22 inches from shoulder to hem
Yarn: Plymouth Encore; 5 skeins main color, 1 skein each of 3 contrasting
colors
Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) double points and 16 inch circular;
US 7 (4.5 mm) double points, 16 and 22 inch circulars
Gauge: TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE
5 stitches to the inch on larger needles over Stocking stitch
Sleeves - knit first; make two: With larger needle, cast on 40 sts; join being careful not to
twist. Change to smaller needle and knit 10 rounds, change to larger needle
and knit 5 rounds. Increase 2 sts. Work Border pattern from
chart. Increase 2 sts after 7th (last) row of pattern. Work in Stocking stitch increasing 2 sts
on every 4th round until you have 66 sts. Continue working in Stocking stitch
until the sleeve is 20 inches long, about 120 rows.
Place stitches on hold separating 14 stitches for the underarm. Make 2.
Body: With larger needle, cast on 180 sts; join being careful not to
twist. Change to smaller needle and knit 10 rounds. Make sure to have markers
at the beginning and half way point. Change to larger needle and knit 5 rounds
increasing 18 sts in the last round thus: k10, m1 (198 sts). Work Border
pattern from chart and continue in Stocking stitch until body is 12 inches
long (or as long as you want it). Make sure to leave 14 stitches on hold at
each underarm.
Next round join sleeves; knit the last body stitch with the first sleeve
stitch and the last sleeve stitch with the first body stitch (prevents a
hole). Knit across front, knit around sleeve, knit across back, knit around
the other sleeve.
*k4 rounds, next round decrease 2 sts at each join thus: k2tog, k1, SSK;
repeat from* 6 times.
For the pattern to work, fudging is required.
Begin working yoke pattern from chart.
Work rounds 1 to 12; round 13: k1 k2tog. Fudge 2 sts to end with 150 sts.
Work rounds 14 to 26; round 27: k1 k2tog. Fudge 2 sts to end with 102 sts.
Work rounds 28 to 32: round 33: k4 k2tog. Fudge 3 sts to end with 88 sts.
Change to smaller needle and work k2, p2 ribbing for 5 rounds or knit for 10
rows for a rolled neck.
Bind off, weave in all ends. Block as needed.
