5 stitches and 7 rows to the inch over Stocking stitch on size US 6 (4.0 mm)
Note on Chart: the notation is standard with the exception
of the “Twist 2 to the right”. Aran Paint© doesn’t have a symbol for “knit2tog,
then knit the first stitch again, drop both stitches from the needle” so, had to
use something that looked right. The stitches with the red S are “knit through
the back loop on the right side and slip with yarn in front on wrong sides”.
Patterns:
Twist (T2) - over 2 stitches
Row 1: knit2tog, then knit the first stitch again, drop both stitches together

purl 2, T2, purl 2, k1tbl, purl 2, B6, 5FB, B6, purl 2, k1tbl, purl 2, T2, purl 2.
Continue working in pattern until brim is about 22 inches long, about 22 repeats of 5FB. Remove temporary cast on and join the ends. With larger needle and right side facing, pick up and knit the slipped edge stitches on one edge; 90 stitches. Work two rounds of purl stitch, turning edge. Work in Stocking stitch (knit every round) until the lining is the same depth as the brim, about 34 rounds. Fold the lining to the inside of the hat and with the smaller circular needle join the lining and the brim thus: insert needle into front loop and knit it together with a stitch from the lining. Continue this way until all the stitches are used up.
Crown: over 90 stitches with smaller circular needle; change to double points when circular needle proves too long.
This can be worked in purl, knit or any background stitch you choose.
Purl (or knit) 2 rounds, placing markers every 15 stitches.
Round 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 to 21: *purl (or knit) 2tog, work to next marker; repeat from*.
Round 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14: purl (or knit) around.
Round 22 (12 stitches left): purl (or knit) 2tog six times.
Round 22: purl (or knit) 2tog three times.
Work a 12 inch I-cord on these three stitches, attach a tassel. Knot the cord close to the hat or let dangle.
Weave in all ends, block as needed.
